La Colombe Is Going to Start Selling Canned Lattes

One to add to the list of creative iced-coffee beverages: La Colombe’s Todd Carmichael has developed a new draft latte — a semi-sweet mixture of coffee and milk that comes from a keg — and he wants to start canning it and selling it all across the country. It’s a smart idea: Competitors like Blue Bottle have sold iced coffee in adorable milk cartons, but no craft-coffee company has displaced Starbucks and its omnipresent bottled Frappuccinos.

What makes Carmichael’s product even more compelling is that it has no added sugar (milk molecules are pressurized to release natural sugar), and it will cost less than $2 per can. After hours of work in his “coffee lab,” Carmichael is currently building out a production site that will enable him to produce 10,000 cans daily. He plans on limiting sales to Philadelphia for the first five months, then have Whole Foods, Wegmans, and Publix distribute it, and, eventually, offer it “fuckin’ everywhere.” As he put it, “Philadelphia is going to be home base for the next generation of coffee.”
